L-karnitien benut vet vir spier, veral hartspier

L-karnitien is geabsorbeer uit rooivleis (witvleis is minder ryk), vlees, suiwel en l-karnitiensupplement en/of is van twee geabsorbeerde aminosuur-boublokkies, nl. lisien en metionien gesintetiseer in die lewer en sirkuleer na spierweefsel, veral hartspier.

Die hooffunksie van l-karnitien is die transport van langketting vetsure deur die mitochondrale membraan vir β-oksidasie in die Krebsiklus om energie te produseer.

L-karnitien is ‘n belangrike voedingstof vir metabolisme, spesifiek vir die omskepping van langketting vetsure in energie, d.w.s. die metaboliese tempo word verhoog deur l-karnitien. L-karnitien verander die liggaamskomposisie ten gunste van spiermassa, oftewel spierweefsel en boonop verseker l-karnitien hartspiergesondheid.
